Course Description:
In this discussion-based class we will have the opportunity to enjoy and learn about the Duke University Nasher Museum’s permanent collection of modern and contemporary art. We will discuss some of the broad themes of art history from the mid-20th century to contemporary times as represented in the Nasher collection. Rather than a comprehensive art history survey, this class is structured around the themes of the various Nasher collection exhibitions that have been shown at the museum in the 15 years of its existence. We will have the opportunity to consider these Nasher works in some depth and discuss their relationship to the general characteristics of each era as well as the theme of each exhibit.
